The rotary heat exchanger (Rotary Heat Exchanger), also known as a Thermal Wheel or rotary heat exchanger, is a highly efficient heat-transfer device widely used in industry and building applications—especially in ventilation systems and drying processes. It transfers thermal energy from one air stream to another via a rotating wheel, achieving high heat-recovery efficiency.

Working Principle:
A rotary heat exchanger consists of a circular wheel, typically made of metal (such as aluminum) or composite materials, with numerous micro-channels or a honeycomb structure inside. Driven by a drive mechanism, the wheel rotates slowly and is divided into two zones:

High-temperature side: when high-temperature exhaust gas passes through the wheel, heat is absorbed and stored by the wheel material.
Low-temperature side: when the wheel rotates to the low-temperature fresh-air side, the stored heat is released to the cold air, raising its temperature.
This continuous rotation transfers heat while keeping the two air streams separated, avoiding direct mixing.

Features and Advantages:
High-efficiency heat recovery: heat-recovery efficiency typically reaches 70%–90%, far higher than many static heat exchangers.
Dual function: it can transfer not only sensible heat (temperature) but, in some designs, also latent heat (humidity) if the wheel surface is coated with hygroscopic material.
Strong adaptability: suitable for high-airflow, large-temperature-difference scenarios such as industrial drying and HVAC systems (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning).
Energy saving and environmental protection: by recovering heat from exhaust gas, it significantly reduces energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Application in Drying Processes:
In drying systems, rotary heat exchangers are often used to recover heat from exhaust air. For example:
Industrial drying (e.g., wood, textiles): when high-temperature humid air is exhausted, the wheel absorbs the heat and transfers it to the incoming cold air, reducing the energy consumption of the heater.
Food processing: when drying grain or fruits and vegetables, the rotary heat exchanger maintains a stable temperature while lowering operating costs.
